Mazda lifts the veil on its new SUV, which completes the manufacturer’s 100% electric range. Kodo modernized design for the exterior, high-tech approach and comfort inside, comfortable autonomy… Our discovery in images of the Mazda CX-6e.
It is at the German headquarters in Frankfurt that Mazda welcomes us to show us its electric newborn. New in the form of an SUV, reinforcing the 100% electric range recently initiated by the Mazda 6e. On the program: an urban but versatile model, refined but very equipped, all under the emblematic stylistic approach of Kodo design. Or the promise of a Mazda CX-6e that is both modern and conservative, characteristic of the Japanese. Let’s make a first discovery with the Takumi Plus high finish in its launch color Nightfall Violet.
The Mazda CX-6e style: Kodo Design 2.0
Enthusiasts know: at Mazda, we are rather conservative. For once, the brand applies its Kodo design philosophy (“The soul in motion”). A visual approach as successful as it is timeless, always allowing the Mazda family to be immediately identified. The new electric SUV therefore receives the same sculptural treatment, with its “winged” grille at the front and its muscular shoulders at the rear. The whole thing, however, is a bit more modern and subtly more intimidating. Sculpted hood and refined profile are punctuated by a delicate lighting signature at the rear, providing a beautiful overall balance. The floating D-pillars conceal air ducts for a style that is both futuristic and functional. Finally, the Mazda CX-6e in its high finish swaps the classic mirrors for digital mirrors. A detail which therefore gives a different look to the profile depending on the level of finish.
Flush handles, hood air inlet Alpine A390rear spoiler… The aerodynamics of the electric SUV are sophisticated, stylish and functional. In addition to being “sober”, the rear pillar in profile reminds us of the stylistic treatment of an Opel Astra! This new interpretation of the Kodo design is therefore intended to be both dynamic and minimalist. The Mazda CX-6e still welcomes a little fantasy: the large Mazda lettering on the rocker panels. In person it appears rather long, wide, and low. More “big crossover” than SUV. However, its dimensions: 4.85 m long, 1.93 m long, and 1.62 m high. The generous wheelbase reaches 2.90 m and is lined with short overhangs. For its part, the trunk volume ranges from 468 to 1,434 liters. Finally, the CX-6e sits on 21-inch diamond-cut wheels for our high-end Takumi Plus finish, in its new Nightfall Violet color.

Mazda 6e test: very good and not so good for this electric sedan…On board: spacious atmosphere and zen techno
The Mazda CX-6e welcomes us into a rather surprising interior. Starting with its Zen atmosphere supported by furniture that is both premium and minimalist. Premium through the combination of colors and materials, like the dashboard which extends towards the doors to envelop us. Minimalist in the treatment of the central console, the induction charger, or even the absence of a prominent meter behind the steering wheel. Here, techno takes precedence. As evidenced by the immense central screen (well not so much anymore) of 26.45 inches. The demonstration mode of our pre-series already allows you to appreciate the extent of the display as well as the interfaces. See for yourself in pictures, for both the driver and the passengers, it looks promising. The multifunction steering wheel remains classic but nicely flattering with its Mazda lettering, instead of the logo as on the Mazda 6e.
To finish with the screens, we don’t forget the return of the camera exterior mirrors, as well as the digital central mirror too. A detail that your servant is not always fond of, but we can see the effectiveness during our tests. Comfort and habitability are not left out. If the dark headliner evokes ambient occlusion similar to that on board a Toyota C-HRthe space on board compensates in quality of welcome. In figures: 1,013 (front) and 994 mm (rear) headroom. 1,481 (front) and 1,432 mm (rear) shoulder width. Up to 990mm of leg length (rear), and 122mm of knee room. In practice, and for the moment statically, the Mazda CX-6e seems indeed welcoming. Special mention to the rear occupants who will benefit from 150 mm of clearance under the front seats to slide their feet.
Up to 610 km of autonomy?
So many values whose real benefits we will obviously appreciate during road tests. On the technical side, the SUV features a 100% electric engine of 190 kW / 258 hp / 290 Nm at the rear. Enough to complete the exercise from 0 to 100 km/h in around 7.9 seconds, and reach a maximum speed of 185 km/h. Consistent values for this Mazda CX-6e weighing 2,125 kg, capable of towing up to 1,500 kg. Behind the wheel, the synchronous electric motor can be operated in three driving modes: Normal, Sport, and Individual (customizable). Mazda obliges, dynamic behavior and handling are to match. The brand specifies that “the development of the chassis, steering, handling, braking system, and tires (…) have been carefully adjusted for reassuring and engaging driving”. All without forgetting the numerous driving aids required.
Finally, the electrical power is entrusted to a 78 kWh LFP battery on a 400 V architecture. A configuration which allows the Mazda CX-6e to claim up to 610 km of autonomy in the urban cycle. In the combined cycle, the brand announces up to 484 km according to the WLTP cycle. A very satisfactory autonomy in our opinion, but which must be associated with less aggressive fast charging than the competition. With a maximum power of 195 kW, allow 24 minutes for 10 to 80%, and 15 minutes for 30 to 80%. As for the standard on-board charger, it will be 11 kW in AC. There, a full charge requires around 8h30. Small purely aesthetic animation: the SUV’s grille lights up when recharging. Last detail: a V2L adapter allows up to 3.5 kW of power for external devices.
Mazda CX-6e: from €46,800
To summarize, the new Mazda CX-6e completes the range with an SUV variant of the 6e sedan, itself resulting from the Mazda / Changan technical partnership. New interpretation of Kodo design, complete equipment, optimal habitability… The promise is interesting. Our only regret in sight: a modest trunk given the size of the machine. With only 363 l under the shelf, it’s less than a Renault Clio 6 significantly more compact. Fortunately, the 80 l compartment with removable bin under the hood compensates somewhat. Beyond this aspect, the manufacturer offers a simplified range.

At the Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda confirms that it is still not focusing on electric vehiclesThe Mazda CX-6e will start at €46,800 in its Takumi finish, with beige or black upholstery, and 19-inch rims as standard. For €3,000 more, the Takumi Plus finish at €49,800 adds 21-inch rims, digital exterior mirrors, and specific upholstery. That is to say a consistent positioning in its segment, at less than €50,000 fully equipped. More expensive, it would have been difficult to find a place in an already busy premium segment. And you, what do you think?
